I was told that money does not come easy. Yesterday I witnessed a very unfair mobile business. I cannot move on like it was nothing big . Two men were walking in the street with an elephant, what’s the business? They were carrying loads of corns packed in plastics and asking people to buy the corn from ‘THEM’, to feed ‘THEIR’ elephant. It was pretty clear that their target was the customer’s emotional share of sympathy, innocence, excitement and the spiritual believes.
A lot of people were thrilled to feed an elephant or take a picture with it. The elephant was trained to bend its knees and make funny noises to show gratitude after someone bought them the food. Every five minutes’ walk people were buying the food and feeding the elephant. I was dining at bank of Mekhong river watching those men making way through every table asking them to buy the corn. On the other hand I saw the huge animal being tortured as it had to make it way through the small spaces between the tables and people feeling its skin.
In Thailand an Elephant is like an Emblem. Any souvenir products or the local Thai clothes have elephant prints. Elephants are considered holy. It is one of the animals that have spiritual existence with Hinduism. Although I have not met a single Thai practicing Hinduism but I have seen the respect they have for Lord Ganesha (The god with the head of an elephant in Hinduism). So in this land where they have high regard for this animal, they should be able to live to its regard. There is a reason why we distinguish animals as wild and domestic. Some people should accept that and just sell corns instead of dragging a huge animal with them.
There is an organization called the Change.org Thailand who’s new campaign states “ Ban all the Elephants form roaming on the roads throughout Thailand, join the government to end a nomadic elephants in Thailand”.
You can check https://www.change.org/th for the story and many more. We have to be the reason for change so be it now.Let the wild experience Wilderness, domestication created humans; a destructive machine
